| Warrington 29pts - Dunkinfield 17pts
Warrington inflicted the biggest defeat of the League leaders at Walton Lea Road on Saturday as they swept to a 29ts to 12 victory. It was a sterling first half performance that brought the win and at the interval the home team had the game wrapped up at 23pts-3.
Warrington played Andy Almond at fly half for the first time and his contribution of 14 points with the boot proved decisive at the end of the game. He impressed also with his kicking from hand and got the backline moving well. He is, without doubt, the find of the season!
Two early penalties from Almond and one from the opposition fly half edged Warrington in front, before Kevin Jones picked up a stray pass and sauntered in from 30 metres out. And stretch Warrington ahead. As the home team dominated possession and territory it was no surprise when John Callander forced his way over from a catch and drive at the line out. On the stroke of half time a blockbusting run from Jones saw him gain his second try and Almond’s conversion put Warrington twenty points clear.
Fast and flowing as the first half was the intervention of the referee’s whistle meant the second half became a dull and stagnated affair. Dukinfield drove over from twenty yards out for a converted try but two quick penalty goals from Almond restored the balance between the two teams. Although Dukinfield were to score a further converted try, when some of Warrington’s tackling was exposed at its weakness, the result was never in doubt and the home team took the spoils.
The League table shows that any two of around 6 teams are very much in the promotion race with Warrington traveling to Sefton on Saturday for a re-arranged fixture against one of their main promotion contenders.
