| Warrington vs Hoylake
Warrington crashed out of the EDF Energy National Cup in the second round. Despite dominating long periods of play Warrington failed to capitalize sufficiently and eventually went out after extra time when the scores after eighty minutes were tied at 12pts each.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring when their right winger nipped over in the corner after ten minutes but it was Warrington who had all the early pressure and it was no surprise when after a catch and drive at the line out KEVIN JONES burst over for a try that ANDY ALMOND converted. Warrington continued to press but a lack of concentration at vital times meant Hoylake kept their line intact and by half time Warrington only led 7-5.
The pattern of play after the break continued after the break and the home team increased their lead when full back MARK TICKLE, who had another strong game, crossed for an unconverted try wide out. Tickle was unfortunately injured in the process of scoring and Warrington continued briefly with only fourteen players. With twenty minutes remaining it was Hoylake who stepped up the pressure and their lively scrum half exposed a gap at the edge of a maul and shot in from 35 yards out with the conversion levelling the scores at 12pts each. Twice Warrington were unable to convert simple penalty kicks which were to prove costly as the game finished level at full time.
With no more scoring within the eighty minutes the game went into extra time and it was Hoylake who proved to be the stronger team scoring two converted tries after a penalty goal had initially put them ahead again. Warrington never really threatened the opposition line again and although the final scoreline of 29pts-12 slightly flattered the opposition the home side only had themselves to blame in the end.
