| OSWESTRY pts vs WARRINGON 15pts
This pre Christmas defeat in Shropshire may well have finished Warrington’s hope of promotion for the season. Despite the fixture having been on the calendar from the start of the season half of the Warrington squad were unavailable for this game and although their replacements performed manfully it was not quite enough to produce the victory.
Warrington got off to a flying start when in the first minute centre Kevin Jones, Warrington’s best back on the day, intercepted a pass and sprinted from the half way line for a try that Shaun McDermott, making his first start of the season, converted. Slowly but surely the home team got into the game and a good backs move and offload allowed them a converted try to level the scores.
The pitch which was heavy in parts began to take it’s toll on the players and when a Warrington kick downfield was badly chased Oswestry responded in style and raced 80 metres for a try under the posts and a half time lead of 14pts-7. That score came on the stroke of half time and when Oswestry scored again immediately after the break it gave Warrington an uphill struggle for the rest of the game.
A late try by Anton Fields after good handling on the blind side gave the visitors renewed hope and with five minutes remaining Mc Dermott’s penalty goal reduced the margin to only four points. Despite being awarded two penalties within the Oswestry 22 in the closing seconds the visitors were unable to create the space for what would have been the winning score.
Warrington do not play again until 5th January when they have a home League game against Liverpool Collegiate at Walton lea Road, kick off 2.30p.m.
