Sefton RUFC 36pts - Warrington RUFC 18pts

Warrington suffered a serious blow in their promotion bid as they were soundly beaten on Saturday in Merseyside.  Sefton showed why they are the current favourites to win the League as their powerful pack bossed the Warrington 8 all afternoon and laid the platform for their win.

Playing into the wind Warrington opened brightly and had most of the possession and territory in the opening forty minutes.  However, failure to control the ball in contact and facing pressure in the set pieces meant Warrington were never able to get a firm grip on the game and despite Paul Yeadon running in a well taken try the home team entered Warrington’s half only four times in that half but came away with a try each time.

24pts-5 down at the break Warrington faced an uphill struggle in the second half but Almond’s early penalty gave them hope.  Sloppy play at the restart immediately put them under pressure and Sefton scored two quick tries to end the game as a contest at 36pts-8.

To their credit Warrington kept their game going and tries from Shaw and Sullivan added some respectability to the scoreline but this is a day that they will want to forget as quickly as possible.

This coming Saturday Warrington face another away trip, this time to Southport who are notoriously difficult to beat at home.  It is over 3 months since Warrington last won on their travels so the strength of the test will not be underestimated.
