| Southport 14pts - Warrington RUFC 5pts
Warrington’s poor away form continued on Saturday as they lost to an ever improving Southport side. The difference between the two sides at the end of the game as Southport kicked all their goals and Warrington failed to kick any. An out of sorts referee meant that both sides were able to expose his deficiencies and as such the game never really spluttered into life.
Warrington spurned an early opportunity to kick at goal when awarded a penalty and within a minute two mistakes meant they went 3 points down as Southport took their first chance to kick at goal. A second penalty out them further ahead before the visitors scored a well worked try which Paul Yeadon finished off in the corner. A penalty count of 8-1 in Southport’s favour kept Warrington under pressure and just before half time a third penalty extended their lead to 9pts-5.
Straight after half time the scoring for the day was completed with a pushover try for the home team leaving Warrington nine points adrift. Although Warrington had plenty of territorial advantage they did not finish off any dominance and missed kicks at goal meant that they were unable to close the gap.
Fortunately for Warrington most of the leading teams dropped points so there remains half a dozen sides in contention for promotion with Sefton and Dukinfield still heading the pack.
This Saturday Warrington entertain Crewe and Nantwich at Walton Lea Raod as the quest for higher level rugby continues.
