| Wallasey RUFC 26pts - Warrington RUFC 15pts
Warrington’s poor run of away form continued on Saturday with this defeat at Wallasey. They have now gone four months without a win away from Walton Lea Road and were once again played off the park by mediocre opposition. The only difference between two average looking teams were that the home side seemed more “up for it” and as a result were quicker to the breakdown, ran stronger and tackled a lot harder than Warrington did.
An early penalty miss by Almond allowed Wallasey to clear their lines and they swept downfield and ventually went into a 7-0 lead when they squirmed over the line from a couple of yards out. That lead was doubled shortly afterwards when weak tackling saw the Wallasey centre go over. Although Almond kicked 3 points for the visitors they trailed by 19ts-3 at half time when Wallasey scored an unconverted try after a catch and drive at a line out.
Even though they had the wind advantage in the second half the visitors could not break out of their own half and it was the 25th minute before the supporting John Callander crashed over by the posts for a try that Almond converted to give Warrington some hope. That hope evaporated a minute later when straight from the kick off Wallasey scored their own 7 pointer and effectively won the match.
Although Sullivan scored a deserved consolation try in the final play of the game from a pushover try it was as they say “too little, too late”. Although mathematically not out of the promotion race Warrington must resign themselves to playing a Level 8 in the RFU for another season next year.
This weekend Warrington entertain Ashton on Mersey in the penultimate home League game of the season.
