| Warrington 2nd XV - 16 - Rossendale 2nd XV -15
The red, white and green machine just keeps on going. Warrington 2nd team beat a very strong Rossendale at Walton Lea on Saturday and consolidate their position in the top quarter of the league. Warrington 2nd team now have the quarter finals of the cup to look forward to against Crewe and Nantwich next Saturday.
Even with the unavailablility of several key players, Warrington were still able to field a very strong team who competed all afternoon against Rossendale. The foundations were again laid in the forwards as Kerai, Hughes and man of the match Tierney tackled and ran hard all day. Warrington went 5-0 up after 20 minutes when Mark Tickle intercepted a kick and beat 3 defenders to score in the corner. As the game progressed Rossendale played some good attacking rugby, especially in their backs. Rossendale scored two tries and the game was evenly balanced. The two teams traded late penalties as the lead exchanged hands a couple of times. Warrington's " Mr Reliable", Danny Griffiths sustained a dead leg late in the game and bravely handed over kicking duties to Matt Rockey. With the last play of the game, Rockey stepped up and slotted the tough kick straight through the posts to give Warrington a one point victory. Paul McKay and Steve West both made solid returns to rugby after long lay offs from the game.
Coach Stewart Coleman said after the game " This was a game which we would have lost earlier on in the season, however, the team now have an inner confidence which enables them to overcome these type of situations. Credit must go to the skipper Rockey Turner who leads these lads so well."
