Wigan 2nd v Warrington
24 - 26 W

Wigan 2nd XV 24     - Warrington XV 26

Just when Warrington 2nd team thought it couldn't get much better, they go and beat the lead leaders AGAIN, this time away from home. Warrington have already reached the semi final of the cup by beating holders Sale Fc in the last round of the cup and things got even better when they scored a last minute winning try against Wigan.

Warrington went behind early on through two Wigan penalty goals and then Wigan converted a try mid way through the first half. Warrington had lots of catch up to do and after slick handling through the backs Leah scored in the corner to put Warrington 21-5 down at half time. Warrington had played the better rugby throughout the first half and played on their strengths of a fast open rucking game. Veterans Turner, Park, Wheatley and Graham all excelled in the pack with the younger members running and tackling hard all day. Warrington rallied at half time and cemented their game plan of driving close in at rucks then shipping the ball wide.

The second half started with Warrington getting a quick push over score through Wheatley who was magnificant at no.8. Hartill got his backs moving with quick ball and the veteran Mullen and the young Griffiths in the centre soon got it together and cut the mid field apart. Warrington got the score back to 24-19 with 8 minutes to go and when a player from each team got sin binned then Warrington utilised the space and Griffiths found a gap with a minute left on the clock and fed the ever improving Leah on the wing who ran the ball in under the sticks. Griffiths stepped up and cooly slotted the winning points.

This win was even better as Warrington went to Wigan with the bare 15 and the cause was not helped when James Farrell broke his thumb in the warm up and Mark Tickle turned his ankle early on in the game. This sort of never say die attitude refects Warrington 2nd teams approach to their rugby. Coach Stewart Coleman said after the game " I thought that we couldn't play much better than we did against Sale, but this was a performance of grit and determination. I am so proud of each and every one of the players who took to the field".
