Warrington 2nd XV 23pts - Wigan XV 14pts
Warrington second team progress to the final of the Halbro trophy after a hard fought game against a strong Wigan team. Warrington went behind early on through a Wigan penalty and then 10 minutes later Wigan capitalised on a Warrington error to go 8-0 up.
Warrington scored their vital try just before half time when West made a fantastic break and fed Leah on the wing to put Warrington back in contention. The back row of West, Kerai and Wheatley fought hard for ball and Turner jumping at two in the line out secured good ball for the backs. Warrington began to pin Wigan back in the second half by some sound tactical kicking by McDermott at 10. From this territory, Warrington received a line out on the Wigan five metre line and from this were able to push Wheatley over for a try.
With 10 minutes left, Rockey broke the Wigan line and almost scored himself, however the ball was fed wide and Leah again scored out wide to make the cup tie secure. The centre pairing of Rickard and Rockey worked hard in attack and defence. The game was played in a good spirit and the Wigan team were gracious in defeat.
Coach Stewart Coleman said after the game “ The first half was not the best for us, however in the second half we decided to stick to the basics and that obviously paid off. We cannot wait for the final now”
The final will take place at Blackburn RUFC on Saturday 3rd May
