Sedgley Park 12 v Warrington Colts 21

Warrington travelled to Sedgley Park for the opening fixture of the Junior Colt’s season. Having played each other last year both squads knew that a close encounter was inevitable.

In near perfect conditions at Whitefield Warrington started the stronger of the 2 teams. Playing into strong wind and applying continual pressure resulted in tight head prop Thomas Green crashing over from short range leaving fly half Tom Arnold a simple conversion in front of the sticks.

Undaunted by this early setback Sedgley came back strongly and with excellent use of the wind pinned Warrington back into their 22. Despite courageous defence Sedgley broke through to score a well worked try in the corner but were unable to covert the try into 7 points.

Sedgley Park grew in confidence as a result of their score and Warrington did well to defend wave after wave of Sedgley attack. With five minutes of the first half remaining Warrington secured some turnover ball and after a speculative kick through from second row and debutante Nick Pennington tireless openside flanker Henry Jeffers was able to dot down for a second try. Flyhalf Arnold added the extra points with a superb conversion from wide on the touchline line. Halftime Warrington 14 Sedgley Park 5.

With Warrington now playing with the wind and having the greater squad numbers they expected to show strongly in the second half. A lack of control at the breakdown and the superb performance of the Sedgley pack, particularly at the scrum and lineout, ensured Warrington had to work even harder. Warrington were able to score their third try via a well worked combination  of backs and forwards which ended with a good finish from outside centre James Brazendale. Arnold rounded off a good afternoon with the boot to secure the extra 2 points.

Undaunted to the end Sedgley continued to press and scored a well deserved second try with some superbly crafted rugby. With greater strength in numbers Sedgley would surely have caused Warrington more problems.

The final score of 21-12 to Warrington was a credit to both teams in a match that was played in great spirit and refereed exceptionally well.
