Warrington Colts 12 - Winnington Park Colts 5

Warrington Junior Colts triumph in top of the table clash.

Warrington junior colts overcame a big and powerful Winnington Park outfit to retain their 100% start to this year’s campaign.

Playing at home for the first time this season it was Warrington who started the brighter of the two teams and soon had Park under the cosh. Despite the size differences in the two packs, Warrington were able to retain possession and run through the phases allowing half backs Riley and Arnold to control the game.

It took 20 minutes however for the territory and possession to turn into points. Once again the home teams forwards retained the ball well and punched holes in the Park defence before fly half Arnold unleashed Rauhihi with a lovely inside switch. The powerful centre glided through the gap and finished off under the posts. Arnold converted to make the score 7-0.

Park were too good a team to be phased by the early showing by Warrington and as the half closed in, they began to use their giant forwards to better effect and gain the upper hand in territory and possession. Half time score 7-0 to Warrington.

Winnington carried the momentum in to the second half and soon had Warrington camped in their own 22. Only the magnificent defensive work which has been a feature of the team this season, held out wave after wave of Park attacks. Jeffers at openside, once again lead the way with an outstanding display of skill and courage. His backrow colleagues of Ryder and Killeavy also produced superb performances.

Eventually however, the damn broke and Winnington’s skilful display of ball retention allowed them to work a smart blindside move which their winger finished off well. The conversion was missed 7 -5 to Warrington.

The try stung the home team and they needed to dive deep into their reserves to force the game back towards Park.

Warrington were able to gain a foothold in the Park 22 and Jeffers topped off another outstanding performance by ducking under their defensive guards and scrambling to the line to score his third try of the season. The conversion was missed 12-5 to Warrington.

Undaunted Park once again came at Warrington with everything they had and only sound tackling from Guest, Rule and Lynch were able to keep the visitors at bay. Brazendale at centre almost broke free to score what would have been the decisive score but great cover defence kept him out.

As the game drew to a conclusion Park were once again camped in the Warrington 22 desperately searching for a score to level the game. They were held up over the line on two occasions by yet more outstanding Warrington defence. The ref finally blew the whistle on a great game of rugby which did credit to both teams.

The reverse fixture is eagerly anticipated by all!! Final score Warrington 12 Winnington Park 5.
