Warrington Colts 36pts - Stockport Colts 5pts
Warrington prove too strong for Stockport.
Warrington retained their position at the top of junior league C with a convincing win over a below strength Stockport team.
Playing at home for only the second time this season Warrington’s strength in depth allowed them to cover for the loss of key players and score 6 tries against a Stockport team who themselves were severely weakened though none availability.
Once again the home team started brightly and after some ferocious tackles provided quick turn over ball they were able to release Lynch, deputising at centre from his usual full back role, to score his second of the season. Arnold converted 7 -0 to Warrington.
Sustained pressure from Warrington throughout the second half saw them score another two unanswered tries, the first from Jeffers who once again lead the pack superbly well and the second a typical powerful finish from Rauhihi.
Half time score Warrington 19 Stockport 0.
With Brazendale functioning well at fly half and usual number ten Tom Arnold dominating his opposite number at scrum half, Warrington continued to apply pressure in the second period.
Hours on the training ground paid dividends as the home team pack was able to maintain possession well and this lead to second row Pennington crashing over under the posts for a try that his individual performance deserved.
Warrington 26 Stockport 0.
Throughout the game Stockport fought ferociously to gain a foothold and their spirit paid off when they were able to cross the Warrington line through a well worked forwards move. The try was very tight in the corner however and the subsequent conversion was missed. Warrington 26 Stockport 5.
The home team re-grouped and the introduction of Lord, Moore, Healy and Pearson, gave the pack a renewed energy. It was one of Warrington’s front row who eventually managed to get his name on the team sheet after his two earlier efforts had been disallowed. Tom Green crashing over from 10 cm to make the score 31 – 5.
Stockport battled to the end and never allowed their heads to drop, unfortunately for them, they leaked a sixth and final try when number 8 Killeavy managed to convert more pressure from the Warrington pack and dive over the line for his first of the season. Brazendale converted.
Final score Warrington 36 - Stockport 5
This was a god game of rugby, with Warrington better able to cope with the loss of key players. A full strength Stockport team will present a stiff test in the return fixture.
