Spice things up with some alternative training sessions
Posted:August 2008

And so we have moved into the height of summer, well we can hope. With pre season training in full swing our illustrious coaching team thought they would spice things up with some alternative training sessions

Firstly we had the water world session, with the water bourn diseases that are around its good to see that the coaches are looking after our health and safety by having us dive face first into pools of, but in the face of adversity they came up trumps and an interesting session was had especially as we will be playing Oswestry in January. From this one I think we may have found a number 10 that kick pass and tackle, from personal experience he can tackle.

Then we had Andrew Farrell, no not the Wigan and GB legend but the MMA star who has more belts than Mark & Spencers, for those that don’t know MMA is better known as Cage fighting, I was asked by a referee pal of mine how training had been going when I told that we have had a cage fighter helping us he said “do you lot (Warrington) really need any help in that department” good to see that the refs don’t have preconceptions of us before they come. I think all would agree that the session was great apart from Mike Tobin who claims that AF has broken his body (quote Courtesy of FACEBOOK)

So to our first game we went leaderless but not clueless to Chorley, with comrade Coleman in Speedos on a beach it was left to peg leg Rockey and JC to send us into battle, first games are always notable affairs mainly for the amount of folk that turn up after not seeing them since the end of last season. Also for the wide range of rugby apparel that is on show with the Fields brother’s executive rugby gear, bob (knock off Nigel) smith Canterbury gear and Text book gaz and tickle sporting their 2nd team final t-shirts with pride we must have look like a right bunch. As with all pre season game there were errors galore but we did well and won compatibly 48 – 3 there were notable performances from the welsh giant Alwyn, the new lad Rich and young ginger Phil.

Hopefully we can build on this and be a force to reckon with through out the season.

'It's not just England internationals who have to put up with 12-month long seasons any more, as the coaching staff at Warrington RUFC have proved. Literally days after the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, Warrington's players were starting their pre-season training as they bid to build on the successes of the last campaign. With the weather far too hot, and the effects of the WRUFC Annual Dinner still in their bloodstreams, the senior squad have taken to the back pitches for touch rugby and more, on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Whether it's the lack of opportunity for the normal off-season weight-gain to kick in, or the chance to wear the same sweaty training gear 2 nights running, numbers have been highly promising so far, and even the 'Wally Gardens sniper' divot hasn't put too many off. Of course, every silver lining has a cloud, so just as everyone was getting used to an hour's touch and a chance to top-up the tan, the coaching staff of Commandant Coleman, Hop-along Rockey, Mad-dog Callender, cool-hand Fields and Zimmer-frame Walker chose to up the ante as we got into July, leading their unsuspecting charges into a whole range of punishing, and in some cases physically impossible, exercises and drills. There are rumours that we might even see a ball sometime in August, but what has definitely been confirmed is that Coombesy is still operating on Australian time, and will be turning up for his pre-season training in December. Training is now at Broomfields lower site, in the hope that proximity to an educational establishment might raise the average intellect of the squad above the sub-normal - but with at least one Tickle brother present at every session so far, this more a dream than an expectation.
