Ormskirk 12 - Warrington 17

Warrington returned to winning ways with this well-earned victory over a strong Ormskirk side. Although they went to sleep for twenty minutes in the second half, the home side did enough overall to win and the margin could have been even greater if a perfectly good second half try form Luke McEvoy had not been disallowed and Ritchie Johnson had managed to keep hold of the ball over the line after he had shrugged off four tackles.

Warrington started well and their lively backs showed some deft touches without turning their flair into points. However, continuous pressure eventually forced a penalty, which was put wide by McNair, but Newens made amends ten minutes later when he slotted over a penalty from 35 yards.

The visitors came back when they pounced on a couple of Warrington mistakes, first from a bad pass which had the Warrington backs scrambling back and then from a misdirected clearance kick which was gratefully accepted by the Ormskirk left winger who strolled over in the corner. Warrington regained the lead ten minutes later when, from a line out on the right hand side of the field, the ball flashed along the back line before McEvoy touched down in the corner. Newens converted to make the half time score 10-5.

Warrington suffered from acute somnambulism for the first twenty minutes of the second half and the Ormskirk forwards were allowed to rumble over for a try which was converted. However, from this point on it was all Warrington. Hughes provided good ball from the lines, the front row ruled the set scrums and the pack as a unit dominated the breakdowns, while Hadden and Kerai consistently made ground in the loose. This provided good ball for the backs, who finally started to realise their potential. This superiority was finally acknowledged when an excellent back move, which featured a superb hand-off from Johnson eventually created an opening for Tickle and the scrum-capped forward, showing the pace normally associated with Thompson, raced through to touch down. Newens converted.

Coach Dave Rockey commented after the game, “This was a vast improvement over our performance last week. Our pack is now starting to dominate in all phases and this is allowing our young talented backs to showcase the talents which they obviously have. Hopefully, our new-found confidence will help us next Saturday when we meet local rivals Widnes.”
