Warrington 9 - Hoylake 29

Although they could justifiably claim that Hoylake gained 14 points of their final total because of extremely lucky bounces of the ball, Warrington side could have no complaint about the final result. They were outplayed by their visitors in all phases, except drop goals, and there was never a glimmer of hope that they would crack the awesome Hoylake defence.

The visitors set out their stall from the kick-off, when their forwards drove and retained the ball to set up their hard running, elusive backs. This constant pressure eventually paid off with an early penalty but Warrington replied when Kerai, who was prominent throughout, tackled and hassled to force a penalty. Newans converted.

Ten minutes later, Warrington conceded the softest try of their season when, following a scrum ten yards out, the tricky Hoylake inside centre amazingly danced over without a hand being laid on him. The try was converted and Hoylake were unlucky not to further extend their lead when they were just forced into touch-in-goal on the stroke of half time.

The visitors did go further ahead shortly into the second period when they forced a five yard scrum and scored a copybook short side try from their right wing. Warrington relied with a drop goal from McNair, following an earlier drop attempt from Newans.

Hoylake increased their lead when the first of their lucky bounces saw their right wing pick and pass inside to his centre who touched down to allow an easy conversion. Warrington cut the deficit when Newans kicked a penalty but Hoylake sealed the result when a relieving kick bounced very fortunately for them and they gratefully accepted the seven points.
