Vagabonds 13pts Warrington 23pts
Warrington put behind then their recent poor form to record their first win of 2010 with a 3 try victory over their fellow relegation strugglers in the Isle of Man.
With Danny Newens injured and Eddie Fields unavailable Warrington were boosted by the return of Matt Rockey from Manchester and included Martin Tierney on the bench - his first appearance with the 1's since dislocating his knee back in September.
Conditions were ideal, with bright sunshine and a light breeze, with the home side taking the lead with a well struck penalty after Steve Williams had been caught offside. However, it was Warrington who dominated the half with Gareth Wheatley the early pick of the forwards and Matt Hennessey having his best game in Warrington colours.
The visitors edged ahead when the ball was recycled and Luke Johnston came up from full back to squeeze over in the corner - his first try for the club. Matt Rockey's penalty from 35 yards put Warrington further ahead and it was slightly against the run of play that Vagas drew level on the stroke of half time when they forced their way over from close range.
Warrington's second half performance was their best 40 minutes of rugby this season, despite losing winger Kevin Jones and later in the half Zak Lythgoe with a recurrence of a rib injury. Lythgoe, who made an immense contribution all afternoon was rewarded for his efforts when he barged past 3 would-be tacklers for his debut try followed shortly by his enforced departure.
A further Rockey penalty stretched Warrington further ahead and then Luke Johnston's "up and under" was misjudged by the home defence and Richie McEvoy, on for Kevin Jones, raced o to the loose ball and scorched under the posts, Rockey tacking on the extras.
With 15 minutes remaining Warrington sensed their first away points of the season were there to be taken, but Vagabonds riposte was immediate scoring a try wide out and then followed by a furious onslaught on the Warrington line. The defence held firm and that elusive victory was gained.
