Warrington's defeat on Saturday means they will require a Houdini act to stop slipping out of Cheshire Lancs South 1.  A minimum 6 points away from safety with only 10 to play for means only an unlikely combination of results can see Warrington avoid the drop.

It could and should have been so different.  A strong start saw Warrington go ahead by 10 points to nil.  Danny Newens capitalising on a Wigan error to score wide out and a Matt Rockey penalty and conversion providing the points.  However, two clear overlaps were also ignored and 4 kickable penalties missed in the opening half hour so the visitors should have been clear and out of sight by that time.

Instead by half-time Warrington trailed by 3 points.  Weak defending on the blind side allowing Wigan to break through on their first visit into Warrington's half and two well struck penalties and a simple conversion put the home side into a lead they were never to give up.

Wigan dominated in the second period as much as Warrington had in the first, the difference being that Wigan turned their advantage into points.  Another blind side break created the space and the strong Wigan no8 ploughed over. Although Rockey hit another penalty, two further ones from Wigan put them clear again and the visitors were left wondering what might have been.

As coach Dave Rockey lamented, “We seemed to leave the office at half time. I was pleased with the way we took our initial chances but not so happy at our squandering of perfectly good scoring opportunities. Wigan rightly made us pay for our generosity.”
