Warrington 10 - Anselmians 32

Playing their first home game of the season against their fellow promotees from last season, this should have been, in theory, Warrington’s easiest game.  The game was indeed evenly balanced, the main difference being Warrington’s lack of a reliable kicker. Anselmians, too, made more of their possession and were able to turn their pressure into points whereas Warrington squandered numerous well worked opportunities with poor handling and often failed to retain possession at crucial points.

Warrington started the game with fire and putting the visitors pack under pressure forced two early penalties which went unconverted.  The Hughes, Alwyn and Jonathon, provided ample line-out ball and the pack were in command at the set-piece to provide Warrington with most of the early possession. Anselmians weathered Warrington’s early pressure, however, and in the 12th minute scored in the corner with a try  engineered by an overlap and some slick handling in the backs.

Warrington responded well with the forwards driving in in the loose providing quick, clean ball for scrum half Hennessey whose snappy service got the back line moving.  A breakdown between full back Almond and winger Mackay with the Anselmian defence well beaten gave no reward. Again having created an overlap, Warrington opted instead for a cross kick which came to nought. Two more penalties to Warrington, went unconverted. Anselmians, however, made their pressure count and scored again 10 minutes later with the forwards barging over from close range.

2 minutes into the second half Warrington began to click and Almond finished a superb run with a well deserved score in the corner. 10 minutes later veteran winger Kev Jones scored in the same spot shrugging off some determined tackling form the visitors. Anselmians hauled themselves back into the game, however, with ex-Irish international Mason pinning Warrington back with his cultured boot and unleashing his back line which racked up another try with 20 minutes to go. Though Warrington came close for a third try through the forwards, Anselmians defended well and capitalised on Warrington errors to score a further try and two more penalties.
