Warrington 1st XV 19 - Glossop 1st XV 12
Warrington achieved their first win of the season by virtue of a solid team performance and three moments of pure brilliance from their talented backs.
The first twenty minutes of this game saw play confined between the 22s with both sides trying to assert dominance. Glossop’s massive pack put continuous pressure upon the Warrington defence but were unable to break through. The stalemate was eventually broken when Warrington forced a scrum twenty yards out and McNair fed an inside pass to Rickard in a well rehearsed move and the centre took a superb line to outwit the defence and touch down. Newans converted.
Shortly before half time, Warrington won turnover ball in the Glossop 22 and Danny Newans showed dancing feet and great pace to touch down. He converted his own try to make the half time score 14-0 to Warrington.
Glossop came back early in the second half when their giant number 8 made a superb break and found his stand-off in support to finish off an excellent move. The visitors then seemed to realise that they had a distinct advantage up-front in terms of weight and size. This advantage eventually saw them score a second try following a driving maul to bring them two points behind Warrington.
Fortunately, Warrington sealed their victory when McNair, who had an excellent game throughout, intercepted in his own half. Although he was overhauled twenty yards from the Glossop line, he managed a desperate off-load and the ever-present Newans accepted the speculative pass to power over.
Coach, Dave Rockey, commented after the game, “This was a workman-like performance and I be4lieve that our season will get better if we can maintain the same work-rate and levels of commitment.”
