Warrington 30 - Vagabonds IoM 15

Warrington turned in their second win of the season with a good display of open rugby, which saw them score four excellent tries, three through the pace and guile of winger Hayes, having his first outing of the season with the senior side.

The visitors found themselves under relentless pressure from the opening whistle but perversely they, not Warrington, opened the scoring with a try following a break from deep. Newans clawed back three points with a penalty and Warrington’s backs at last started to realise some of their potential. Particularly outstanding was the side’s longest-serving back, Kevin Jones, who first put in a superb run towards the tight corner and then, minutes later, cut through the opposing defence like the proverbial knife through butter to touch down under the posts. Newans converted. The sides then exchanged penalties to make the half time score 13-8.

Vagabonds muscled up in the second half and started to play to the strengths of their heavier, more robust pack. However, they found it impossible to contain Warrington’s pace. Eventually, quick ball from a ruck was flashed along the line and Mike Leigh laid of a beautifully weighted pass to back row Fields who made ground before handing on to right winger Hayes. With still much to do, the speedster used the touchline before cutting inside to score between the posts and allow Newans an easy conversion

Hayes scored again when he picked up a loose ball at a breakdown, following another backs’ break featuring the well-balanced running of centre Leigh, and scuttled over.

The visitors came back briefly with a try from their forwards but the final word was left to Warring, and to right wing Hayes, who finished off yet another phase of Warrington open rugby to score in the left-hand corner.

However, Brian saved his greatest show of speed for after the match, when disappeared well before anybody could say “Get the jug in, Bri!!!”
