Bowdon RUFC 34 - Warrington RUFC 0

Contrary to the expectation from a top v bottom of the league game, and the resultant scoreline, this was far from a onesided match with Warrington continuing to show considerable improvement on their previous performances. This was particularly noticeable from the forwards in their speed and determination to the breakdown and their ability to provide quick recycled ball at least in the first a half. Despite their fair share of possession from off-the-top line-out ball from Alwyn Hughes and a determination to play running rugby, an unsettled back line could not penetrate the Bowdon defence from the set piece.

However, on a number of occasions centre Jones turned defence into attack with some well-spotted interceptions but unfortunately these could not be turned into points. Full back Almond, too, showing faultless hands throughout, counter attacked incisively and was Warrington’s most potent threat. Linking well with winger McLarney, he was the catalyst for many of Warrington’s forays into the Bowdon 22 but that was as far as it went.

Bowdon opened the scoring wit a penalty after 15 minutes and in a purple patch just before half time ran in two tries through some uncharacteristically poor tackling.
Eventually the 2-stone per man weight disadvantage up front took its toll and Warrington were increasingly on the defensive. Whereas the Bowdon stand-off pinned Warrington back in the corners, equally good kicking from Warrington stand-off McNair was more pressure relieving than attack inspiring. McNair also demonstrated his defensive qualities with some resolute tackling against some determined running from Bowdon’s large Commonwealth contingent. On the 60th minute Bowdon scored a well-worked try under the posts using a move which had brought Warringtn success in the past and 10 minutes later, despite a bone- crunching tackle from Hartill a skilful off-load from the Bowdon standoff resulted in a final try.

This was a good spirited display from the team but until Warrington can field a more settled side they will find victory elusive in this difficult league.
