Warrington 3rd XV 17 - Widnes 2nd XV 24
A gutsy performance from Warrington’s third string saw them almost achieve a memorable victory over their local Widnes rivals. In fact, they were deservedly in the lead until the last quarter, when the visitors came back with a late try and a penalty.
Warrington were the first on the scoreboard when Craig Byrne showing his usual aggression muscled over from short range. Presley converted. Widnes replied with a try and a penalty to make the score 7-8 at half time.
Rhiann Mullen marked his entry into the fray with a try on his first touch of the ball. From a scrum 40 yards out, he picked a devastating line, wrong-footed the defence and scorched over. Presley converted. Widnes replied with an unconverted try before Presley extended the home side’s lead with a 55 yard penalty. Unfortunately, Widnes countered with two penalties of their own and a late try to claim the final spoils.
Particularly outstanding for Warrington were Craig Byrne and Jonathan Wilkes in the forwards, while Carter’s grandmother would have been proud of his non-stop effort.
There will be a Warrington past players’ lunch before the game against Oswestry this Saturday. This will begin at 12.00 noon and all past players are welcome. For further information, contact Mark Winstanley on 07851195213
