Warrington 2nd 26 - Sefton 2nd 8
Warrington’s second string ground out a convincing win against a strong Sefton outfit but as head coach, Dave Rockey commented, “The win would have been much easier with a slight improvement in basic skills.” Even so, Rockey was impressed with the depth of talent available.
Warrington raced into a 12 point lead in this game, first thanks to a signature Brian Hayes try in the corner following good handling and then from a fine individual effort from Craig Byrne. The back row picked up in broken play, 30 yards out, used Wainwright as a decoy and powered over between the sticks to allow McDermott and easy conversion. Sefton replied with a try and a penalty to make the half time score 12-8
Warrington closed off the game in the second period by virtue of two excellent tries from Mark Tickle, both of which were converted by McDermott. Jayesh Karai was man of the match, with a performance which saw him cover every single blade of grass at least twice.
