Warrington 2nd XV 21 - Warrington 3rd XV 20
One of the advantages, or disadvantages of two sides from the same club playing in the same league is that they have to meet each other in a real game twice a season. This game on Saturday was all about bragging rights and although these were gained, for the time being, by the 2nd team, the match itself was fiercely contested and a credit to both sets of players.
The forward battle was not for the faint-hearted, with no quarter asked and none given. Surprisingly, in the scrums, the 3rd team proved stronger but they had no answer to the athleticism of Hughes and Yoxhall in the lines. However the threes scavenged superbly, especially through Bracegirdle who seemed to be everywhere. This hustling pressure brought them two early penalties through the trusty boot of Presley.
McDermott replied with two penalties for the twos before the threes came back with the best try of the match. The backs combined well to set up an excellent short pass for Captain Mullen to steam through and flick the ball up in the tackle for Morris to finish off the move. Presley converted.
The lead was short-lived when McDermott put in a superb kick to the corner and Chris White touched down from the ensuing catch and drive to make the half time score 13 each.
McDermott kicked an early second half penalty before Kerai put in an explosive twenty yard burst to score in the corner and take the score to 21-13. The threes had the last word when Griffiths followed up his own kick through to score and allow Presley an easy conversion, with just one point separating two excellent teams at the final whistle.
