Warrington 2nd XV 33 - Lymm 3rd XV 15
Warrington’s second string backs showcased their considerable skills in a fast and furious first half, which saw them score four tries to close down the game as a contest in the first forty minutes.
McEvoy opened the scoring when he latched onto a short pass from James Shaw, after the centre had found a gap in the Lymm defence. McDermott converted from the touchline. Ten minutes later, full back McEvoy showed his pace once more when he ghosted into the line and touched down again in the corner.
Warrington’s centres, provided with good ball from the forwards and the half backs, then started to run riot. James Shaw showed that he has lost none of his old pace when he sliced through the opposition and fed fellow centre Wainwright, who provided the clinical finish. Wainwright then picked up his second try, when he combined with stand-off McDermott, much as he used to combine with stand-off Briers in a previous existence, to take a superb reverse pass and power over. Lymm replied with a try from a rolling maul to make the score at the turn-around, 26-5.
Warrington went off the boil in the second period and allowed Lymm to score two more tries through their forwards. However, the highlight of the dour half was a signature try from Wainwright, which completed his hat trick.
