Crewe & Nantwich 3rd XV 55 - Warrington 3rd XV 15
This game was a total mismatch as Crewe drafted half of their first team into their third string to ensure that they had control of all facets of the game. As a result, they amassed 31 points in the first half. Warrington’s only reply was a push-over try touched down by Gloucester.
The home side ran in a further 24 points in the second stanza but the try of the game belonged to Warrington when stand-off Nicholson received the ball from a set scrum 30 yards out, sold a beautiful dummy and outpaced the cover defence to touch down under the posts, in a fashion reminiscent of his glory days. Presley converted and then kicked a penalty in the closing minutes.
Outstanding for Warrington in what was never a fair contest, were half backs Wright and Nicholson and John Imry who never took a backward step in the front row.
