Presley’s long range boot put Warrington into an early lead with 2 penalties but the visitors bounced back with a penalty of their own and the first try. Warrington responded quickly, however, from a lineout 25m out with hooker Byrne latching on to a deft pass from Hamblett and bullocking his way to the try line. Presley converted to make the score 13-8 at the interval.

Captain Mullen worked hard from 25m out for Warrington’s second try and Presley’s unerring boot stretched the lead with the conversion and a further penalty. Winnington pulled a penalty back but Warrington’s uncompromising defence snuffed out any chance of a Winnington resurgence.
