Warrington’s third string performed heroically against heavier, more experienced opposition and did well to keep the winning margin to less than 10 points. The home side were unlucky not to open the scoring when they had what appeared to be a perfectly good try disallowed. Crewe suffered no such injustice when they touched down between the posts.

Warrington then came back with the try of the match the, after sustained forward pressure, spearheaded by Jones, the ball was crisply shipped along the back line and speedy winger Bucknor finished off by scoring in the corner.

Crewe’s power up front proved too much for Warrington in the second half although they managed to restrict their opponents to just one converted try.
